Grand Alternative is YOUR alternative for substance-free fun during Grand Prix. This annual celebration grows bigger and better every year with more than 50 events including concerts, movies, parties, cookouts, athletic events, and Grand Prix racing festivities.
Grand Alternative is a program designed to offer substance-free events to the Purdue campus community during Grand Prix weekend. Grand Alternative was started by the Wesley Foundation at Purdue (The United Methodist Student Center) under the leadership of the Rev. Steve Cain and student Amy Pritchard in 1998 with 12 student groups hosting six events during the week prior to Grand Prix. Grand Alternative is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students with support from the Student Wellness Office, Purdue Student Union Board, and Division of Recreational Sports. The Office of the Dean of Students has served as the central office of the Grand Alternative initiative since 2001.
The primary goal of Grand Alternative is to empower student organization leaders to help provide solutions to the high-risk and underage drinking problems at Purdue. By providing substance-free choices for Purdue students, the intent is that fewer acts of violence and vandalism will occur and fewer negative consequences from alcohol use will occur.
Mini-grants are available to recognized student organizations and offices on campus that wish to host or co-host substance-free events during Grand Prix Week. The mini-grants are made possible by a grant from the Drug-Free Coalition of Tippecanoe County. This year the Coalition has awarded the Office of the Dean of Students with $5,483.50. Substance-free events and activities that are free, fun and take place on or around campus between 9:00 p.m.-1 a.m. are highly encouraged.
